Ray-tracing rendering backend for ecommerce
2024 | A market-leading company providing a visual content management platform for web developers.
Business problem
1
The company currently offers web developers an API-first content management system for images and videos.
2
Client just got into 3D, offering rudimentary content management features for 3D, namely model storage and simple, unappealing webGL based image and spinner video rendering in an empty scene.
3
The company wants to allow its e-commerce customers to create compelling renderings of their 3D models within realistic scenes.
Solution
Automated rendering pipeline based on open-source ray tracing renderer (Cycles, Blender).
Setup is done within the existing webGL based web application (interface and workflow preserved).
Rendering parameters are sent to the rendering pipeline and translated to the ray tracing renderer parameters, while making sure to keep fidelity to the original scene composition.

Provides both full quality mode and a fast preview mode.
Frames are rendered and returned to the web application.
Deployment: Provided working docker image, collaborated with the client's R&D team around deployment at scale.
